Why Grow Onions?

Updated: Dec 13, 2020

Onions are the most versatile vegetable to grow in your garden. They can be used in so many ways for cooking and pack a flavourful punch. They can also regenerate and can be stored for several weeks in a cool dry place after harvesting. Onions also grow generously without consistent watering and don't need a lot of thinning or attention until harvest.

PLANTING ONIONS

We recommend planting onions from sets in raised planter beds as you can see in the video below. But they can also be planted by seed or transplanted from a starter plant.

Onions like the full sun, so be sure to plant them in an area where they won't be shaded. Make sure soil is well-drained and loose for planting. You can turn in some compost before planting to help your onions get started. They are considered a heavy feeder and like lots of nutrients to feed off of.

If planting by seed it is recommended to start indoors 6 weeks before the last frost date.

If panting sets directly sow in your garden or planter bed. Onions are a cool weather plant so they can be planted earlier in the spring. Plant sets 2-6 inches apart and one inch under the soil. Adding mulch between sets will help retain moisture and deter weeds.

You can plant sprouted onions. If your onion ends sprout you can plant them in a pot and add water generously and harvest the greens sprouts.

Did you know?

“Try not to store onions with fruit like apples, or pears they will disrupte the onions dormancy with the ethylene gas they produce and spoil them. Onions will in return change the flavour of the apples."
